Works of Fancy and Imagination
Strahan, 1871.
First collected edition of George MacDonald's stories and poems. 16mo. Publisher's fine diaper cloth over bevelled boards with elaborate gilt decoration. All edges gilt and silk page markers. A very good set indeed, with just slight wear to volume seven, which has a couple of corner chips to the rear endpapers. Neat contemporary gift inscription to volume one and owner's name to later volumes.
An uncommon set, it is nice to find it in this condition. The volumes comprise: vol I: Within and Without and A Hidden Life; vol II: Poems, The Gospel Women, Sonnets, and Organ Songs; vol III: Violin Songs; Songs of Days and Nights; A Book of Dreams; Roadside Poems and Poems for Children; vol IV: Parables; Ballads plus Scotch Songs and Ballads; vol V: Phantastes; vol VI: Phantastes, A Faerie Romance; vol VII: The Portent; vol VIII: The Light Princess; The Giant's Heart and The Shadows; vol IX: Cross Purposes; The Golden Key; The Carasoyn and Little Daylight; vol X: The Cruel Painter; The Castle; The Wow o' Rivven; The Broken Swords; The Gray Wolf and Uncle Cornelius His Story.
