A Reading Diary
INSCRIBED BY ROSETTI
Time Flies A Reading Diary
Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 1885.
First edition. 8vo. Publisher's navy blue cloth, lettered gilt with gilt vignette to the upper cover. All edges red. Black coated endpapers. Inscribed by Rossetti to the front endpaper verso, "Dr Hare, from his old friend and patient Christina G. Rossetti". A near fine copy with a couple of light marks to the boards.
A charming association copy of Rossetti's reading diary, inscribed by her for the family doctor Dr Charles G. Hare, in whose care Rossetti was under "more or less constantly" between 1845 and 1850. The book, in the form of a diary, is perhaps the most autobiographical of Rossetti's works, mixing poetry and prose. Having suffered from various maladies including a bout of Graves disease Christina never fully regained her previous strength and her weakened heart left her permanently under the care of her physician. Her brother William wrote that one could not understand his sister unless one recognises that she "was an almost constant and often a sadly-smitten invalid."
