From The Macpherson Collection.
Old Ship Prints From The Macpherson Collection.
John Lane, 1927.
First edition. 4to. Publisher's green cloth, lettered gilt to the spine. Fifteen plates in colour and ninety-five illustrations in black and white. A very good copy indeed.
A survey of "every kind of sailing ship which the engravers in the past sought to illustrate", ranging from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century.
The prints illustrated come from the collection of A. G. H. Macpherson, who collected over 11,000 maritime prints. In the year of publication this collection was bought by Sir James Caird to begin the collection of The National Maritime Museum, which was eventually opened ten years later.
