THE FIRST PROFESSIONAL FEMALE ART CRITIC
Sacred and Legendary Art Comprising: Sacred And Legendary Art, Legends Of The Monastic Orders, Legends Of The Madonna, The History Of Our Lord
Longmans, Green and Co., 1870.
Six volumes, later editions. 8vo. All finely bound in contemporary tree calf, with tooled decorative gilt rules to each cover and to the spines five raised bands enclosing four gilt decorated boxes, with two morocco title labels. All edges gilt. Profusely illustrated with monochrome reproductions of the artwork discussed by Jameson, including 88 full-page plates and 721 woodcuts in the text. An attractive set, in very good condition overall. Five of the volumes are in near fine condition, but the second volume has a crack to the upper joint. A little fading to the spines but internally exceptionally fresh and clean. Bookplates to the front endpapers of each volume.
A beautiful set of the series of work on which Anna Jameson's reputation as an art historian rests. It remained in print for seventy years following its conception in the late 1840s.
"Obituaries in The Athenaeum, the Art-Journal, and the Gentleman's Magazine regarded this series as 'the greatest literary labour of a busy life', 'books which have become standard works in Art-literature', and maintained that as 'an art-critic Mrs. Jameson was almost unrivalled'. She was effectively the first professional female art critic, and throughout her career she also contributed articles and reviews to a variety of respected British journals" (Judith Johnston, ODNB).
