A Romance of Exmoor
STAR-CROSSED LOVERS IN EXMOOR
Lorna Doone A Romance of Exmoor
Sampson Low, Son, & Marston, 1869.
First edition. 8vo. Three volumes. Later polished calf with gilt double rules to the covers and raised bands and brown morocco title labels to the spine. Gilt tooling to the spine compartments. Original cloth covers and spine bound into the rear of each volume. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. In near fine condition, clean and fresh with light wear to two joints. Neat ownership initials to the binder's blank of the first volume. A handsome set.
Lorna Doone, the work on which Blackmore's popularity and significant literary standing in the latter half of the nineteenth century entirely rests, had a rather curious publishing history. Having struggled to find a publisher for the work, it was eventually published in an edition of 500 copies of which, in spite of good reviews, only some 300 were sold. A year later, a one volume cheap edition was published, which was great success, and the work has scarcely been out of print since.
