First illustrated edition. Green cloth with gilt lettering, some overall fading to covers, in pictorial dustwrapper. Pictorial map endpapers. Twenty-eight black and white illustrations by Clifford Webb and two maps by Steven Spurrier. A fine copy in a superb, fine dustwrapper, which is virtually without fault and as crisp and clean as the day it was issued.
Due to Ransome's objection to Stephen Spurrier's proposed illustrations, the first edition was issued without illustrations in the text. This 'new illustrated edition' with Clifford Webb's now familiar style of woodcuts was issued a year later and is rare in a dustwrapper.
