Mount Everest: The Reconnaissance, 1921
Arnold, 1922.
First edition. 4to. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering. Illustrated with photographs and maps. A near fine copy.
In 1921 the British Mount Everest Reconnaissance Expedition, led by Colonel Charles Howard-Bury, set off to explore the northern route to Mount Everest via Tibet (Nepal being closed to foreigners at the time). The party included George Mallory on his first visit to the Himalayas - he became the lead climber, the first Westerner to set foot on the mountain and contributed six of the chapters. The book chronicles the obstacles the Expedition surmounted, as well as early mountaineering techniques that paved the way for the first attempt on the summit in 1922.
