This expedition, the second North Pole attempt funded by American businessman William Ziegler, attempted "to establish a base in Franz Josef Land and from there make an assault on the North Pole" (Howgego).
Though the expedition did not meet its ultimate goal, nor achieve a farthest north, "the amount of work accomplished in the consequently scant time available is sufficient evidence of the indefatigable and persistent prosecution of the observations on the part of the scientific party" (Fiala). This included complete magnetic, meteorological, tidal and astronomic observations for the extent of the expedition and close studies of the Aurora Borealis (the fruits of which are reproduced here in colour).
