A very good set, some toning and wear to the upper cover of the first volume and lower cover of the last. The spines of two volumes restored, others with wear to the spine ends. Pencil ownership inscription to five of the volumes.
Newman's famous retort to criticism levelled at his conversion to Catholicism by the novelist Charles Kingsley.
His Apologia, "would finally convince the protestant public that he had not been an agent for popery as a Tractarian and that his submission to Rome was entirely sincere.
