In 1909, outgoing President Theodore Roosevelt led the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African expedition through modern day Kenya, Congo, Uganda and South Sudan, collecting 23,151 specimens that took eight years to catalogue.
The present work, largely based on the larger mammals observed on the expedition is "a gem of a field of study decades ahead of its time in providing detailed natural-history accounts of all the larger mammals encountered on the expedition." (Darrin Lunde, The Naturalist, Theodore Roosevelt, 2016)
