Domicilium
[Privately Printed for Clement Shorter], 1916.
First edition. One of just twenty-five copies printed for private circulation by Clement Shorter, an editor of Hardy's. A single quarto quire sewn in stiff purple paper wrappers, printed black. Inscribed by Shorter to the publisher John Lane on the front endpaper, "John Lane from C. K. S. July 12. 23". A fine copy.
Shorter was a literary journalist, editor and collector who printed a number of Hardy's verse and prose in Sphere and Tatler, also produced a number of these printed pamphlets for circulation among his friends and those of Hardy. By way of preface, Shorter notes of Domicilium, "this, the earliest discoverable poem written by Mr Thomas Hardy, presents the environment of his boyhood. He generously permits me to add it to this privately printed series."
Purdy p. 176.
