The Three Mulla-Mulgars
Duckworth, 1910.
First edition. 8vo. Original green pictorial cloth, lettered gilt and decroated in black, in the like pictorial grey dustwrapper, printed and lettered in black. Top edge gilt.
Colour frontispiece and one further colour plate by J. R. Monsell. A bright and clean fine copy in a very good dustwrapper indeed, the spine tanned a little, with a couple of short closed tears to the edges, and a short tape repair to the reverse of the upper fold.
WITH: A typed letter signed by De La Mare to a Mr Caulfield, thanking him for an invitation to speak to the Gryphon Club, and apologising for being unable to do so.
Uncommon in the dustwrapper. Often described as a neglected masterpiece, this was also one of Richard Adams' favourite novels. He noted that it created a reality that stayed true to itself, a world to which "the devoted reader can return again and again for delight and comfort". It was mainly from here that Adams took the idea of a journey as the basis for his landmark novel, Watership Down. In his autobiography Adams writes of his favourite children's book "A tear springs to my eye as I think of what I owe to it", saying "Years later, I was able to meet Walter de la Mare and thank him - thank God."[The Days Gone By]
