Top edge gilt. 206 illustrations throughout the text, including maps, sketches and photographic reproductions. Folding colour map to rear of the first volume. A very near fine copy, the cloth bright and contents clean, with two short closed tears to the head of the spine of the first volume. Autograph annotation to the foot of the preface "W. H. B. passed away at Bristol, Dec. 27th 1905".
A history of Congo from the 15th century to the 19th, detailing in particular the work of the Christian mission, by the missionary, lexicographer and compiler of the Dictionary And Grammar Of The Kongo Language (1887).
