First edition. Number 138 of 500 Deluxe copies SIGNED by Nielsen. 4to. Full white vellum with gilt lettering and gilt decorative panel with blue border. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Pictorial endpapers illustrated with black silhouettes and gold designs. 25 colour plates are mounted on Japon and are all perfect under their captioned tissue guards. There are also a number of black and white drawings, chapter headings and decorative borders. A very good copy that shows minor surface dustiness and some spotting to the spine. Silk ties wanting as usual. Internally perfect.
East of the Sun and West of the Moon, a collection of Norwegian fairy tales by Peter Christen Asbjornsen, represents Nielsen's "pièce de resistance" in book illustration. His illustrations are very striking, leaving a lasting impression, and, combined with the luxury of the book's production, form a breathtaking result. Widely acknowledged as one of the most important and impressive books of the Golden Age of book illustration, and a great rarity.
