INSCRIBED TO HIS PARENTS
Lupercal
Faber, 1960.
First edition. Inscribed by Hughes to his parents on the title page, "To Mom and Dad, with love, Ted,. February 26th 1960, Number 2." Original maroon cloth in printed dustwrapper. A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper.
Hughes received six author's copies on 23rd February from Faber (some three weeks before the official publication date). He inscribed the first copy to his wife Sylvia Plath, and this, as denoted by his inscription, is the second copy he inscribed.
Hughes's parents were evidently proud of his success as a poet. Laid into this copy are two newspaper cuttings that they had kept with the book. The first is Al Alvarez's influential review of Lupercal, in the Observer, under the title "An Outstanding Young Poet." A second cutting, this time from the Yorkshire Post, leads with "Further Success For Mytholmroyd-born Poet, Ted Hughes", references the Alvarez review in the Observer and announces his winning of the 1960 Somerset Maugham award.
