Du Maurier's first novel.
In 1927 whilst living at Ferryside near Fowey, du Maurier got to know a local boatman, Adams, who told her stories about his family, including the tale of his wife's grandmother, Jane Slade. Jane's story provided the basis for the character Janet Coombe in The Loving Spirit and is likely to be what du Maurier is referring to when she writes that "some of it is true".
PROVENANCE: From the library of Foy Quiller-Couch, daughter of Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch and close friend of Du Maurier.
