340 x 200mm. A collection of the five original pencil sketches by E.H. Shepard used for A.A. Milne's poem, Missing in When We Were Very Young. The drawings are collected on a single sheet of card which is signed in pencil by Shepard under which a note reads "Rough pencil sketch for Missing".

PUNCH VOL. CLXVI (Jan-June, 1924) Original publisher's red cloth, a very good copy, which contains the original serialisation of 25 of the verses in When We Were Very Young.
Reproduced in the June 4, 1924 issue (p.605) of Punch (illustrating Milne's Poem) and on pages 52 to 54 of When We Were Very Young.
Prior to collection in book form, Milne serialised his children's verses in Punch (which Milne edited from 1903-1914). The first three poems published in the Jan 9 issue went unillustrated, but the fourth and many of the subsequent poems were embellished by Punch's political cartoonist E.H. Shepard. Milne was editor when Shepard had started contributing to Punch and described his style as "perfectly hopeless". Not surprisingly, Shepard was nervous about illustrating the Punch extracts but the author was delighted with the results and one of the most memorable author - illustrator combinations was formed.
This particular piece, with the illustrations forming a large border, was drawn for the Punch contribution, and as such is a rare example of Milne and Shepard's collaboration at its formative stage. We are not aware of any other such example being offered in commerce.
