An imperialist novel in which Ayesha, a white sorceress rules over a lost African Kingdom, She-who-must-be obeyed had discovered the secret of immortality and enchanted all who set eyes on her. Narrated in the first person by British explorer, Horace Holly.
On completion of the manuscript of She, Rider Haggard supposedly announced to his agent "There is what I shall be remembered by".
"From the very first day of publication She was a best seller, the subject of literary controversy and a book, which a century later, has hardly ever been out of print either in the UK or the USA; a book that has been translated into over twenty languages, filmed nearly a dozen times, and made the subject of plays, an opera and a ballet." - Peter Berresford Ellis
The book has been adapted for film and televison on numerous occasions, the most famous of which is the 1965 adaptation staring Urusla Andress as She.
