INSCRIBED TO LADY OTTOLINE MORRELL
The Bridge Over San Luis Rey
Longmans, 1927.
First edition (preceding the American edition by a few days). Original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine and vignette of author's signature to upper cover. Inscribed by the author to Lady Ottoline Morrell on the title page, "For Lady Ottoline with the best regards of Thornton Wilder / London January 1929". Morrell's ownership monogram in pencil on the front end paper and occasional marginal pencil markings.
A very good copy indeed with just a little wear to the spine ends. In a very good (supplied) dustwrapper, which has had some restoration to the top of the spine.
With:
Two autograph letters from Wilder to Morrell, both in original autograph envelopes.
The first, one page of Savoy note paper, dated 12 Jan 1929, states how he and his sister are looking forward to meeting Morrell, and thanking her for her "beautiful words about my book...".
The second, one page of Yale University Elizabethan Club note paper, dated 2 Feb 1929, thanks Morrell for her hospitality and for a copy of "The Sentimental Journey". He also adds, "Your apologising for the monogram and the marginal markings will not be accepted; they make the book a sort of happy palimpsest".
Wilder won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928. This classic adventure story was made into a very successful film in 1944.
