John St John served in the Halberdiers with Evelyn Waugh during the Second World War. When St John first entered the Royal Marines mess he write that "I was the youngest, and the eldest was thirty-six: a short, peppery-looking person called Evelyn Waugh". Despite this age gap the two became close wartime friends, and this memoir describes many scenes - such as the abortive attack on Dakar - that form part of the narrative in Waugh's Sword Of Honour trilogy.
