Told and Illustrated by Le Cain
King Arthur's Sword Told and Illustrated by Le Cain
Faber and Faber, 1968.
First edition. 4to. Pictorial paper boards in a wraparound pictorial dustwrapper. Pictorial endpapers and lots of colour plates by Le Cain. A near fine copy, in a bright, near fine price clipped, dustwrapper, ever so slightly rubbed at the extremities.
Le Cain's first book, brilliantly illustrated. A small print run, so quite elusive. In this work Le Cain's art is very reminiscent of Nielsen, Beardsley and Clarke. His inspiration for the drawings is taken from medieval manuscripts and features elaborate borders around the text.
The drawings began life as the storyboard for a film that was never made, but the designs for it were shown to Faber and Errol was launched on his career as a picture book artist. 'It had been something I'd always wanted to do, to Illustrate children's books, but I'd never known how to set about It.'
