By William Shakespeare
the daintiest, most delicately finished work
A Midsummer Night's Dream By William Shakespeare
Constable, 1914.
First edition with illustrations by Heath Robinson, first issue with pictorial cloth. Large 4to. In the original pictorial dustwrapper. Beautifully decorated green cloth with decoration in gilt, pinks and blues. Twelve colour plates and sixty-three line drawings. A very good copy with a nick to the bottom of the title page, in a good dustwrapper with a chip to spine ends and upper cover and two pin holes to the lower cover.
When the book was introduced as a Christmas Gift book in 1914 reviews were very favourable, "...some of the daintiest, most delicately finished work that has ever come from [Robinson's] brush. His fairies have the grace and airy lightness that belong to to those little people; and he has depicted varying phases of the story with the delightful humour and happy spirit of romance in which Shakespeare conceived them."
This beautiful book was issued in this rather sumptuous binding and later in cheaper plain cloth and boards.
