Lightbody on Liberty

BALCHIN, Nigel

BALCHIN, Nigel Lightbody on Liberty

Collins, 1936.

First edition. Original red cloth with blue titles to the spine. In light blue pictorial dustwrapper, printed in blue and red. AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the front end paper, "It must be remembered that this should be tried in a juvenile court. Nigel Balchin" A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper, which shows just the slightest dustiness.

The author's third and breakthrough novel. Following several minor run-ins with the law, shopkeeper Alfred Lightbody is transformed into a crusader for justice and 'The League of Free Britishers' is formed. It is a "gloriously diverting satire... on officialdom.. and other petty restrictions as they affect the so-called liberty of the British citizen... [and].. the great god Publicity as it figures in national life." [Blurb]
The inscription undoubtedly refers to Balchin's own age as he was only 27 when he wrote this.
