Three volumes. Large quarto. Finely bound by Carl Sonntag in full crushed red morocco with raised bands to the spine and double ruled border to the covers and spine compartments. Gilt titles to the spine and top edge gilt. Morocco turn ins with single gilt rule. Each volume housed in a fleece-lined, marbled slipcase with morocco entry. Printed in Golden type with woodcut decorative initials and borders. Title page and two full page wood-engraved illustrations by Burne Jones. A near fine set, with a little wear to the joints and raised bands on the spine.
One of only 500 copies issued of one of the most handsome and sought books published by the Kelmscott Press.
"The Golden Legend, a mediaeval collection of saints' lives, held great appeal for Morris.It was intended to be the earliest book produced at the KP, but because of its length and some problems with the first delivery of paper from Batchelor, Morris was forced to issue several shorter volumes before it was completed" (Peterson)
