This is the first of a series of almanacs to be illustrated by Barbier and is a real delight. Guirlandes des Mois is a series of almanacs produced by Jules Maynial and illustrated by George Barbier, the delightful little books (five in total) were published annually between 1917 - 1921. Barbier was a keen book collector and his own collection included a series of seventeenth - early nineteenth century almanacs and it was this collection which inspired the design of the Guirlandes. The books contain an anthology of writings, bank pages for notes and a calendar. The illustrations are beautifully delicate, with covers, dustwrappers and box all containing different drawings. Beginning on the war years many of the illustrations reflect the times, with images of soldiers on leave wooing elegant young women.
