The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
Harrap, 1930.
First edition with these Pogany illustrations. Deluxe edition, number 447 of 750 copies signed by the artist. Bound in publisher's full turquoise leather binding with gilt lettering and coloured vignette to upper cover. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Twelve beautiful tipped in colour plates (a couple with light corner turns), small etchings and vignettes to text pages. In addition there is a signed etching by Pogany bound in opposite the title page. A very good copy of this handsome production. The turquoise leather has the usual darkening to the spine and front hinge with a short split.
Having illustrated the poem in 1909 Pogany revisited Omar Khayyam's verse in 1930 with a completely new set of illustrations, commenting "My last Omar pictures... are quite different from the Omar Khayyam I did in London years ago. But I think they are just as true to the Oriental spirit. I have Westernized and modernized Omar more, but perhaps I have interpreted him more nearly to present day readers."
