And Other Places
The City of Dreadful Night And Other Places
Wheeler & Co., Allahabad/ Sampson Low, Marston & Co. Ltd., 1891.
First English edition. Slim 8vo. Later quarter brown cloth over beige card boards. Original grey-green paper wrapper bound in, lettered in black "No. XIV Wheeler & Co's Indian Railway Library. One Rupee." Errata slip not present. A very good copy indeed, bound in wrapper with two small chips, but generally a nice survival of an ephemeral item.
The City of Dreadful Night and Other Sketches was first prepared for publication by A.H. Wheeler & Co. in 1890, but was suppressed by Kipling. In 1891, much of this material was published under the title The City of Dreadful Night and Other Places by A.H. Wheeler in India and together by Wheeler and Sampson Low in England as no.XIV in the Indian Railway Library series.
The titular story is rich with horror and macabre and Kipling meditates on a hot, dark night in Lahore.
