Carmen by Prosper Merimée. Translated by A.E. Johnson
Hutchinson, 1916.
First edition. Edition de luxe, number 56 of 100 copies signed by Rene Bull. 4to Full white vellum with gilt lettering and decoration. All edges gilt. Pictorial endpapers depicting silhouettes of bullfighters. Sixteen colour plates, under captioned tissue guards, by Bull, plus many line drawings in the text. A very good copy indeed, some foxing throughout, but externally unusually clean and bright. A most attractive copy.
This is a charming version of Merimée's tale, which was the basis for Bizet's opera of the same title. Rene Bull's vibrant illustrations perfectly match the intense drama of love and jealousy.
