with Notes on the Other Sparkling Wines of France
A History of Champagne with Notes on the Other Sparkling Wines of France
Henry Sotheran, 1882.
First edition. 4to. Green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. Bevelled edges and all page edges gilt. Engraved frontis, five engraved plates and many engravings in the text, totalling 350 illustrations in all, including numerous illustrations from ancient manuscripts and 200 original sketches made under the author's supervision. There is one coloured folding map of the vineyards. A very good copy indeed, some light rubs to the cloth and sporadic spots of foxing to the text.
An exhaustive and fascinating work detailing the history of Champagne's wine, region and traditions. As might be expected there are significant segments on Reims, Epernay, Pierry and Ay. Other chapters include the history of Champagne in England, "the strong and foaming wine of Champagne was found so injurious that Henry V. was obliged after the battle of Agincourt, to forbid its use in his army, excepting when tempered with water", and the sparkling wines of Saumur and Sauternes.
Issued simultaneously by Sotheran and Vizetelly himself.
