REVIEW COPY IN DUSTWRAPPER
The High History of the Holy Graal Translated from Old French by Sebastian Evans.
Dent, 1903.
First edition. Royal 8vo. Pale blue pictorial cloth decoration in black and gilt. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. With dustwrapper and a pre-publication review slip. Illustrated title page, frontispiece and twenty two full page illustrations. The illustrations are very detailed line drawings, some in a red decorative border. There are also thirty six ornamental head pieces. The book is in very good condition, there is a patch of discolouration to the rear board and some foxing to the endpapers, but is generally bright and attractive. The presence of the dustjacket is exceedingly uncommon. Both panels and flaps are present, but the majority of the spine is replaced and lettering to the spine lost. The upper panel is complete and displays the original sale price of 10s 6d.
This sumptuously produced book is described by Colin White as "one of Jessie's most important achievements". The elaborate borders are reminiscent of Burne-Jones and William Morris' productions for the Kelmscott press. The paper is of high quality which feels lovely in the hand and the illustrations are fantastical and striking. White describes them as giving the reader "a glimpse of a land and time remote from reality".
