Words by Bertha Upton
THE FIRST GOLLIWOGG BOOK
The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls Words by Bertha Upton
Longmans, Green & Co., 1895.
First edition. Oblong 4to. Cloth spine and paper covered boards illustrated in colour. Colour title page and many colour plates. There are also small line drawings printed in brown on the text pages. A very good copy indeed, bright externally, some foxing to the contents.
This book plays a significant role as it sees the first appearance of a black doll called a "Golliwogg". The story revolves around 2 dolls who encounter the Golly, "To see a horrid sight! The blackest gnome". The character of the Golliwogg was so warmly received that the future stories in this series have him as the central figure.
