Told by C.S. Evans
PRESENTATION COPY WITH ORIGINAL DRAWING
The Sleeping Beauty - With Original Drawing Told by C.S. Evans
William Heinemann, 1920.
First edition illustrated by Rackham. 4to. Quarter cloth over paper covered boards illustrated with black and red silhouettes. Original sketch on the half title, depicting an elfin figure in feathered hat creeping across the page with a finger held to his lips in a silencing gesture, presumably so as not to wake the characters from the story. The sketch is accompanied by Rackham's inscription "Awdry+ Robert / with love from / Edyth + Arthur Rackham / Christmas 1920". Pictorial endpapers. Colour frontispiece, six double page illustrations in silhouette (some three colour) and lots of other silhouette style illustrations. A near fine copy, light rubs to corners.
Every year the Rackhams presented a copy of Arthur Rackham's latest gift book to members of Edyth Rackham's large family.
PROVENANCE: Christmas gift to Robert and Awdry Starkie from Arthur Rackham and his wife. Arthur Rackham married Edyth Starkie in 1903 and each Christmas Arthur sent his latest book to her family.
