A Holiday Adventure
NINETEENTH CENTURY WELLS IN DUSTWRAPPER
The Wheels of Chance A Holiday Adventure
Dent, 1896.
First edition, first state with 10 page publisher's catalogue dated October 1896. 8vo. Original red buckram with gilt titles and vignette. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. In the very rare printed dustwrapper. Illustrated by J. Ayton Symington. A fine copy of the book, with just light offsetting to the endpapers and spotting to page edges. The brown dustwrapper is lettered in plain black type with the original 5/- net on the spine. About an inch of the plain paper to the lower spine has been replaced and some corners have been strengthened. The upper joint has a long tear, almost two thirds of the way down and a small amount of paper loss. Despite the faults the wrapper is a good example and provides a very pleasing example of this rare item.
This novel, written between The Island of Dr. Moreau and The Invisible Man, is a "sentimental comedy which has cashed in on the craze for cycling" (Mackenzie) and was made into a film in 1921 by Harold Shaw. To our knowledge, the earliest extant Wells first edition in a dustwrapper.
