WELLS, H.G. The First Men in the Moon in The Strand Magazine Vols. 20 and 21.

Newnes, 1900.

Two volumes. Publisher's original pictorial blue cloth with gilt blocked titles on the spine. Illustrated in black and white throughout. A good set, some rubbing and marks to the boards, volume twenty lacking front endpaper and with a split front hinge.

Apparently inspired by Jules Verne's Journey to the Moon, this is one of pioneering works of science fiction. Unlike the Verne's earlier work, Wells had all the sceintific aspects of his lunar voyage verified for plausibility by experts at the time. In 1919 it became the first of the films to be based on Wells' work.
