The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
Gollancz, 1963.
First edition. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine in red printed dustwrapper. A near fine copy, slightly cocked with the customary tanning to the page edges and an ownership name to the front pastedown in a near fine dustwrapper which shows a little fading to the spine and a small stain to the rear panel, but is generally crisp and bright.
Le Carre's third novel, which made his name and established him as a natural successor to Ian Fleming as the pre-eminent espionage writer in the latter part of the twentieth century. Le Carre's style differed to Fleming's in his use of realism to create "a new vitality and literary style to the spy novel. The Cold War is presented in a grey, menacing light, [and] espionage is depicted as a sordid occupation" - McCormick & Fletcher (Spy Fiction: A Connoisseur's Guide)
The book was an instant success and won the CWA Gold Dagger in 1963, the Somerset Maugham Award in 1964.
