With an Introduction by Thomas Bodkin
The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault With an Introduction by Thomas Bodkin
Harrap, 1922.
First edition. 4to. Publisher's white cloth lettered in black with blue vignettes to upper cover and spine, in the rare original dustwrapper. Twenty-four of Harry Clarke's stunning colour and black and white full page plates. A near fine, bright copy, in a very good dustwrapper, front flap has some internal strengthening and there is a shallow chip to the lower edge of the rear panel, overall a clean, attractive example of this rare dustwrapper.
This is one of the most sought after and elusive of Clarke's works. Containing such popular fairy tales as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty it's illustrations have a magical quality. Clarke's style, very reminiscent of Nielsen, is seen at its best, with the combination of colour and black and white. There are no UK reprints of this title nor was a limited edition printed.
