Secret Despatches From Arabia Published by Permission of the Foreign Office, with a foreword by A.W. Lawrence
The Golden Cockerel Press, 1939.
First edition. 4to. Number 819 of 1000, bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in quarter black Niger morocco on cream buckram boards. Five raised bands and gilt titles to spine. Printed on mould made paper. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Frontispiece portrait of Lawrence. A fine copy, very minor spotting to endpapers.
The book is made up of the contents of a confidential paper written by Lawrence called 'The Arab Bulletin', which was issued in Cairo between 1916 and 1918. The bulletins were published by the British Arab Bureau, co-founded by Lawrence, and the reports and dispatches detailing the progress of the Arab Revolt were considered so secret only around 30 copies per issue were printed, dissemination being strictly limited. In addition to the reports, also included here is "Syrian Cross Currents", a previously unpublished manuscript from the Arab Bureau. Limited to only 1000 copies this is the most extensive of Lawrence's works published by the Golden Cockerel Press.
