Original black morocco with blind rules and tooling and five gilt vignettes to upper cover, and blind rules and tooling to rear cover, decorative inlaid brass bevelled edges to upper and lower boards and decorated brass clasps to fore edge. Blind ruled bands to spine and gilt titles. All edges gilt. Full colour title page, colour frontispiece under tissue guard, as well as 19 further plates, comprising of eleven colour illustrations of bible stories, four decorative pages for a "family portrait gallery" and four decorative pages for "parents names", "children's names" "marriages" and "deaths". A very good copy indeed, neatly repaired to upper joint. Internally minor scratches to endpapers, and some spots of foxing. Various autograph names and dates written in ink to "parent's names, children's names, marriages and deaths" plates, dating from the mid 1800s to mid 1900s.
The Rev. John Brown's most significant work was this self-interpreting bible. It was first published in 1778 and remained in print well into the 20th century.
