The Google Book Written and illustrated by V.C.V.
J & E Bumpus, 1913.
First edition. Large 4to. Number 98 of only 100 copies, signed by the author. Quarter white buckram over blue boards. Both spine and upper cover lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. 'Lear-esque' style poems about rare birds, a black and white vignette on the title page and 34 magnificent tipped in colour plates. Plates are in deep, striking colours, somewhat reminiscent of some of Detmold's work. A very good copy indeed, some darkening and small marks to the upper cover and spine, endpapers a little foxed, but internally clean and bright. Housed in custom made clamshell box.
This is one of the great rarities amongst the collectable illustrated books of the Golden Age. Vincent Cartwright Vickers was Director of the Bank of England, who sadly died age 39. The Google is a magical bird creature that inhabits the Land of Google, which can be visited by children in their dreams.
