Nicolay and Hay were Lincoln's personal secretaries during the American Civil War, with access to all the President's papers. They produced a monumental history of Lincoln in 1890 and were later encouraged by Lincoln's eldest son, Robert T Lincoln, to collect, edit and publish Lincoln's speeches, letters, state papers and miscellaneous writings, of which this is the very handsome limited edition.
