Preface by W.M. Rossetti
The Poetical Works of Henry W. Longfellow Preface by W.M. Rossetti
Ward, Lock & Co. 1900.
One volume. 8vo. Handsomely bound in full red morocco, with gilt decorations and lettering. Marbled endpapers, gilt inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Engravings by Thomas Seccombe. A fine, bright copy. Bookplate to the front pastedown.
Includes the epic poem, The Song of Hiawatha, in which Longfellow depicts the life journey of a real historical Native American, chief of the Onondaga tribe. Using trochaic tetrameter, a form which he felt accurately represented the rhythms of Native American singing, Longfellow lyrically relates Hiawatha's magical childhood, his marriage to Minnehaha, and his attempts to bring peace and prosperity to his people.
