First illustrated edition. 4to. Blue cloth covers with gilt lettering and decoration of birds and stars. Illustrated blue end papers of birds flying over a rural scene. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Twenty-five tipped in colour plates on art paper by F. Cayley-Robinson, each under a tissue guard. A fine copy, in notably nice condition.
Cayley-Robinson was also responsible for the poster, costume and stage designs for The Blue Bird which premiered at the Haymarket Theatre in December 1909. Contemporary critics described the artwork as 'almost divine in their symphonic loveliness of colour and design'.
The play tells of a quest to find the magical Blue Bird of Happiness in order to cure a child's illness, two siblings set off on a journey aided by the good fairy, Bérylune.
