A Child's Book of Hours
Humphrey Milford, 1921.
First edition. Folio. Quarter brown cloth over printed tan paper boards, printed on sixteen thick card boards, in rare pictorial dustwrapper which mirrors the upper cover decoration. Colour frontispiece and thirteen mounted colour plates, plus vignettes throughout. A near fine, bright copy, occasional light spotting, in a very good dustwrapper with a closed tear to the head of the spine and some creasing to the edges.
This oversized children's board book narrates a child's day, hour by hour, in verse. Verses paint a picture of each part of the day, including morning, school time, arithmetic, freedom, and stories, each verse accompanied by a colour illustration, very much reminiscent in style to that of Jessie Willcox Smith.
Constance Irving designed fabric patterns for companies such as Foxtons, her brush-stroke style and bright florals were distinct amongst the post-impressionist textile artists, it is likely the colour plates are drawn by her, whilst the verses may be written by W. Noel Irving, who penned verses for other children's books.
