Le Cain began his career as a designer and animator with Richard William's animation studio until he turned freelance in the 1969. His first major solo project was to provide animated backgrounds for a BBC production of "The Snow Queen", which aired on Christmas Day, 1976. This book followed, with text adapted by Naomi Lewis.
