First edition. Original light brown vertical-grain cloth with titles to spine and upper board gilt, colour pictorial onlay to upper board. Frontispiece and seven black and white plates after M.A. and W.A.J. Claus. An exceptionally fine copy. The vulnerable, light coloured cloth is perfectly clean and free from wear and the gilt as bright as the day it was issued. Contemporary name to the front endpaper, internally perfect. A truly remarkable copy.
The author's first and most famous book, written as fiction for all ages it quickly established itself as a literary classic and since the mid twentieth century has been considered one of the landmarks of children's literature.
Anne of Green Gables was an immediate success and catapulted Montgomery and Prince Edward Island (Montgomery's home and setting for the novel) to instant fame. It has since been translated into twenty languages and sold more than 50 million copies.
