Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen
Harrap, 1916.
First edition in publisher's deluxe limp suede binding. 4to. Brown suede covers with gilt lettering and blind stamped decoration. Top edge gilt. Sixteen tipped in colour plates and 24 full page black and white plates, plus numerous smaller black and white drawings. This copy is rather fragile, with light wear to the top of the spine and looseness between sections, there has also been some strengthening to the initial section and one tissue guard is creased. All of the tipped in illustrations are perfect.
One of Clarke's most sought after works the illustrations in this book are quite spectacular, the colour plates have a feel of Kay Nielsen to them, whilst the black and white images are very reminiscent of the work of Aubrey Beardsley. This deluxe binding is very uncommon, due to the nature of the soft suede which perishes easily and the fact that the book is slightly too heavy for its binding it rarely survives in original condition.
