Railway Series no. 1
The Three Railway Engines Railway Series no. 1
Ward, 1967.
17th impression. 12mo. Original blue boards with silver lettering and vignettes, in yellow pictorial dust wrapper. Signed by the author on the title page. Illustrated throughout in colour by C. Reginald Dalby. A very good copy indeed in a very good dust wrapper. The dustwrapper has a few small chips, but remains clean.
'It all began,' says Wilbert [Awdry], 'when Christopher caught measles...'. Like so many of the best books written for children the first book in the Railway Series, The Three Railway Engines, began as a story to please one particular child. (Brian Sibley - The Thomas the Tank Engine Man).
The story was well received and Awdry looked for a publisher. It was a few years and a good few rejections later that they came to the notice of Edmund Ward, a small printer from Leicester who agreed to publish the book 'in good class style at a later date'.
