First edition. 8vo. Red cloth with gilt titles to spine and lettering in black on the upper cover. Top edge gilt. Sixteen charming colour illustrations of Italian scenes by George S. Elgood, with excellent line drawn head and tail pieces by William Scott. A very good copy, with some sunning to the spine and scattered foxing throughout. Transfer marks to the occasional page.
One of the 7s 6d series, this copy a variant with black titles to the upper cover. Inman's bibliography lists no reprints. Alfred Austin, poet laureate, describes in poetry and prose a sojourn in a Tuscan Villa above Florence. George Elgood was a fine painter of gardens and was able to command the high fee of over £5 a picture.
