Housed in original box, with 6 proof bookplates, each signed by the artist, in a card chemise. Includes an ALS from Simon Lawrence, the publisher, to Gordon Smith thanking him for the loan of his line blocks for reproduction in the book. Sixty-five illustrations of bookplate designs by Shirley Smith, including 9 engravings printed from the original wood-blocks and 12 from line-blocks, 6 of the illustrations tipped in, and photographic frontispiece of Shirley Smith. A fine copy.
A beautifully produced volume celebrating the bookplate designs of noted artist Richard Shirley Smith. Gordon Smith, a senior member of the Bookplate Society, met Shirley Smith at an exhibition and asked him if he would "design an ex-libris for me to include my interest in the subjects of sculpture, wine and the female nude. Richard then showed me... a painting he had done earlier and it so encapsulated everything I wanted that we agreed on that very subject." [B North Lee]
