Rochester's often scurrilous verse was at once admired and infamous, much of it being either sharply satirical or scandalously lewd. Smith was commissioned by The Folio Press to illustrate the poems in his trademark "subtly delicious, ice-cream tonalities that are so instantly recognisable" in which his highly original decorative flights of fancy perfectly fit with Rochester's Restoration wit.
